This is appalling behavior, and it appears some disgruntled staff refuse to move on. The YMCA literally saved a life in our family from a child's experience in their swim lessons, he saved a child at a lake.
Any flagrant attempt to slander such a worthwhile organization is quite rude and inappropriate. No one was complaining when parents paid coaches cash on the side for private sessions which I have now learned was against YMCA policy (how brazen to act against one's employer, I know I would be fired it I broke policy at my company). No one complained at the immature behavior of the coaches, flirting, eating, talking on cell phones rather than paying attention to the children.
Something needed to happen, I'm sorry to see the YMCA having been put in such a position, we joined over there at the Y yesterday and another competitive team -- we moved on.
We moved on as any mature individual would, and it appears maturity is lacking in the former gymnastics leadership group. Move on, no one wins.
This pettiness does not surprise me in the least, we have seen a total deterioration of quality in the last year with nothing but hollow promises to fix it. I can only assume my child was not in the "in" crowd.
We will be life long supporters of the YMCA.
I fully expect the childish individuals leading this baseless effort to delete this quickly, Lord forbid anyone move against the cause. Show courage, leave it up.
Well DSL, I'm speechless! As a parent I want my kids to eventually reach a competitive level which is real life and what they are working so hard for.
If you don't want yours competing keep them at the Y. They can get to level 4, and probably become coaches there.
Furthermore, You say that things fell apart over the past year, but in fact the gymnastics staff have been there far longer it is the management who came in a year ago and started messing things up. So your blame is in the wrong place.
Furthermore, this is not an attack against the Y as a whole just the Y in the context of the PAST YEAR.
And frankly, if the Y had handled things better, by not firing everyone, and not screwing the parents, everyone wouldn't be upset.
If you were to ask any of the parents just two years ago, we, too would have told you we would remain lifetime supporters of the YMCA. We, the parents, moved the equipment - most of which we did car washes and fundraisers for - into the gym, helped set it up, and as a community and proud parents we set that gym up...if you were lucky enough to be in the gym, you may have noticed the pictures on the wall by the bathrooms.
When the YMCA met with the Parents, they did not say anything about competitive sports...they spoke of one thing, and one thing only - that the gym was losing money. Keri at one point even said she didn't want to say anything more - because we the parents remembered too much. That was why they wanted to raise the rates, and that is also what Dana said she had been told to do...raise the income of the gym.
The YMCA's professional mouthpiece may have tried to smooth things over, but unfortunately for the YMCA sometimes the truth hurts - like the YMCA hurt our kids, and our families.
In my household, we will never again support the YMCA, and my children went there for more than nine years. We have made ourselves a promise to tell ten people a week how the YMCA let us and the community down....not for our own good, but so that other children do not have to experience the apathy that the YMCA has shown towards kids and the community.
The YMCA was a great organization years ago...and we have seen in the last three years how money can change how an organization runs.
The YMCA management lied repeatedly to the parents, made empty promises, and left our kids in tears. Yes, I am mad, and I can honestly say I hate the YMCA, Keri, and Tom.
As far as competitive sports goes, this country was built by winners, and the ideals that if you try hard enough, you can achieve greatness. The YMCA also used to stand for similar values.
The YMCA guy said that they no longer want a competitive environment where any one child wins....it's my opinion that if you do not have winners to set the bar at new heights, then you will never know the spirit of hard work, setting goals, and achievement.
If everybody wins all the time, then noone does.
In my opinion, the YMCA no longer cares for our kids, Keri made that quite clear out back of the gym when she said she was ready to start over. They Were not Honest with us when they gave us empty promises time and again. They would not take responsibility for their actions when they shut the gym down - instead they sent a professional spokesman to "spin" why the YMCA was shuttering the program, and they certainly did not show any respect for we, their customers when they continually strung us along, and then shut the program down over winter break.
That's caring, honesty, responsibility, and respect - all the banners on the wall - and that is what you say you want to support.
Whatever program you signed up for could be next...they lied to us, and they can lie to you. If you think they won't, just ask a former YMCA gymnastics parent.
DSL, Excuse me, but I cannot believe you are telling us to move on. Yes, we will eventually, because families work through hard times together, but when you spend over 12 years of your life in the same gym and have been through it all with the gym family, good times and bad, you cannot just "move on." The gym had become like a home for me and the rest of my family (gymnasts and coaches). You have not been put in the same situation that we have. It is a very hurtful situation, and I am sure that if your children were put in the same situation that we were that you would be very disappointed with the YMCA. I must agree with Speechless and say that the YMCA has been a good place for me to be up until recently. I would not be the person I am today without it, but they have lost pretty much all of the respect they have earned from me over twelve years in a matter of about two hours. So I ask you to please do not tell us about the YMCA being put in a bad position by us, because they are the ones who have done us wrong. Until you know the facts of all they have done to hurt us children, coaches, and parents... Thanks
