This story has been very big on channel 3 news. 6 P.M. last night and 6 A.M. this morning.
It shows the Y as it is. Not there for the kids and apparently competition is for adults only.
Per the Y’s spokesman, Mike something: “Were getting rid of competitive sports as they do not fit the Y’s philosophy of Kids all play and they all win”.
The only message I get from the Y’s statement is “don’t bring your kids to us if you’re hoping for success and achievements (Strong Kids). Bring them to us if you want week emotionally sheltered malleable kids who don’t ever have to succeed or lose to win”.
Is there a reason nobody is signing their name? Isn't everybody an adult? What are you afraid of?
I sent my kids to the YMCA for gymnastics training. Two days ago, without warning, my son showed up to practice and found out that he was no longer part of the Y team.
My children love their coaches. The coaches are the most important aspect of training. I'm probably as far off the 'inside loop' as any parent can be. All I know is that a mean looking lady glared at my 10 year old son when he wanted to go inside and get his granola bars and athletic tape from his locker. I'm told that lady was the YMCA person who arrived to lock my son out of the gym.
Yes - she locked MY son out of the gym. Without warning.
Y'know, I kind of wonder if this is a basic problem with the Greater Phoenix YMCAs? My kids participated in a sports camp the last few summers. It was an oddly run program. The kids rarely did the sports they were supposed to, spending a lot of time watching movies or just playing games. At the end of last summer, the kids told me they didn't want to go back. They'd been hoping for training in the various sports, but often ended up doing other things with a revolving cast of 'coaches'.
I thought it was all pretty casual. After watching how poorly the YMCA handled terminating competitive gymnastics, I'm thinking this might be typical. The kids were at Christown, by the way.
Enough. We're getting ourselves situated at Oasis. My daughter will be joining them on a developmental track. She's still very distraught over the loss of her coach and worries what will happen to Amber. I'll be blogging about what happened at the Y, as soon as I get it a little clearer. I received the Y's explanation in the mail today. As far as I can tell, they decided they'd rather leave the kids out on the street than...what? Fulfill their commitment and let the kids finish out the competition season without all the drama?
Pulleaze! How old are the people running the YMCA? Their behavior is childish and that's about the kindest thing I can say at the moment. I won't be supporting the Y in the Phoenix area any longer. Life is short.
You can find my blog at the end of the link. I hope everybody else will sign their names also, no matter what side of the brouhaha you are on.
Anybody who thinks what the Y did to our kids on Tuesday is okay, seriously needs to rethink the what the word 'appropriate' means. They treated the kids like dirt under their shoes. My son deserved better than to be accused of stealing his own possession from his locker.
Mike? This kind of thing belongs in top blog posts, not in comment trails. I'm not certain what the purpose of this blog is, but it seems an excellent vehicle for informing of what exactly happened, as well as keeping parents updated on media coverage, or developments with the coaches and kids. If there's anything in the comments that should be brought to light, I suggest highlighting it in a top post.
Am I understanding you correctly that some of the anonymice are the people who kicked our kids to the curb? Then it's obvious why they won't sign their names.
I am very disappointed in the decision the YMCA has made in regards to gymnastics. I was looking forward for my daughter, Amelia, to work with Miss Danielle. Amelia has a lot of potential and they lost some of the best teachers and coaches. I was wondering if anyone had a way to contact Danielle and if they do to please give her my email and ask her to contact me. My name is Nakema, my daughter's name is Amelia Gonzalez and she was in Miss Amber's class and Danielle asked to work with her. My email address is gonzalez7799@yahoo.com.
Thanks for your support. We're hoping to use this blog in the ways you suggest, and also as a general discussion forum for everyone to use. Now that the blog is arranged the way we want it, we will start using the main posts as you suggest.
WOW! I can't believe all of this has happened. I recently joined the YMCA gymnastics program. My daughter wanted to join the competitive cheer program, but they were not taking new people at this time, so I thought my daughter could kill some time doing the gymnastics as it has all of the tumbeling she enjoys. We signed up for begining gymnastics. When the opprotunity arose to change to the tumbeling class I signed her up, but at the same time she was asked to change over to the Kipettes. I wasn't sure, but she wants to give gymnastics more of a chance. Then the winter break...........Now I am a bit angry with the Y myself. Why sign up for a class that won't take her any where? Heck....I am not sure if there is a Kipettes now....and part of why my daughter wanted to sign up for it so bad was because of Danielle (whom I am guessing won't be there now). I really can't afford to change gyms, though there is another place that offers affordable cheer tumbeling and stunting. Should we go there? Is there even still a cheer competitive team? and if so for how long? It really wasn't a good faith gesture of the Y to let people sign up for classes for the upcoming month knowing full well that there was going to be chaos and turmoil. I am trying to get answers to these couple of questions before I make a decisison to stay or go, but the way I see it I should have had these answers several weeks ago when we reenrolled for classes during open registraition.
Hi Nakema, Which Danielle are you refering to. Daniell Hall is now coaching at Oasis Gymnastics in Peoria, you might be able to contact her there. Good Luck Julie
I too am very sad about the decision that Tim Martin and the YMCA made to close the competitive gymnastics program. My daughter was to compete in her first meet this month she has worked really hard this year to make the Level 4 team. For now we will be going to Oasis for the month but after that I am not sure what we will be able to afford. The private Gym's are all very expensive. The YMCA provided my daughter an opertunity to compete in a sport that we could not afford otherwise. Now we are preaty much shut out of the sport due to money. I hope everyone is writing those letters to anyone who will listen.
The YMCA has some very big Corporate sponsors and these companies need to know what the Y has done to our kids. I think the the National Director of the YMCA needs to be made aware of our concerns we have with how the local chapter is accounting for the money it receives.
It's amazing how fast Tim shut our program down when we began to question him about the finances, and the rate increase!
Someone in a email suggusted opening an acount up with a bank, to try and raise some funds to help those who are not able to afford one of the private gym's. I think that is a great idea and would like to see that happen. Lets see if we can get some publicty on that.
To Dana, Hang in there, and have faith. What comes around goes around. I think that Tim is getting a little nervous with his decision, have you seen his letter's to the editor with some local paper's. I like the statement about the 75mil in upgrades to all Y facilities. Where was ours.. Keep up with the posting's.
I just found out what happened. Well what they want to tell us. I just read Dana's letter and can't believe they did that. My 2 kids have been going to classes there since april of last year. Ashley was very upset after her class. She wants her other coaches back. So if anyone can tell me where coach corey, amanda(munchkin) and coach amber are I would greatly appreciate it. All of my kids love the coaches they had I would like to continue with them. I was told coach Amber went back to school to become a teacher. Not sure if that is true but if she is still coaching somewhere else please let me know. Bobby loves having her. I will be immediately pulling mine out of the Y's program. They are not trust worthy people anymore. Dana ran that place wonderfully. Please email me with any info you can at pinkerton3@qwest.net. They never sent out any info to me regarding the different coaches or did they explain that when I signed them up for this session. That is very dishonest.

Such is life
I haven't seen any of the news coverage yet. I'm confused if this is an issue with all the Greater Phoenix YMCAs or just the Deer Valley branch.
Enlightenment always appreciated.
